Welcome to Le Camere sul Golfo. This selection of landmarks and traditions is designed to help you discover the most authentic soul of our city, between Baroque treasures and ancient seafaring rituals.
Discovering Gallipoli: A Journey into the Heart of Salento
Architecture and Faith
Saint Agatha Cathedral: A masterpiece of Lecce Baroque. The facade, carved in local “carparo” stone, is an intricate stone embroidery housing one of the most significant art galleries in the Salento region.
Santa Maria della Purità: A small, white church overlooking the sea. The contrast between its simple exterior and the extraordinary richness of the 18th-century tiled floor and paintings is truly unmissable.
History and Fortifications

Angevin-Aragonese Castle: An imposing fortress dominating the entrance to the old town. While the interior is currently closed to the public due to a change in management, its majestic exterior remains one of the undisputed symbols of Gallipoli.
Hypogeum Oil Mill (Palazzo Granafei): A journey into the city’s depths to discover “underground” Gallipoli, where “lampante” oil was once produced to light the major capitals of Europe.
Maritime Traditions
The Return of the ‘Paranze’: A daily ritual. At the end of their fishing trip, the boats return to the Canneto harbor pier. Here, in an authentic atmosphere, you can witness the traditional retail sale of fresh fish directly from the fishermen.
Sant’Andrea Island: A natural oasis topped by its historic lighthouse. We recommend a boat excursion to admire the city’s skyline from the water and enjoy the crystal-clear depths of the nature reserve.
Landmarks and Views
Sunset on the Riviera: A walk along the ancient fortified walls offers the city’s most evocative views, especially as the sun disappears behind Sant’Andrea Island.
17th-Century Bridge: The historic link between the old borgo and the modern city. From here, you can admire the small harbor and capture the most famous view of Gallipoli’s ancient quarter.
